Lynton and Lynmouth are the furthest we regularly travel along the coast, and the twenty miles from Barnstaple take around forty minutes on the A39 over Exmoor. It is a genuinely long run by North Devon standards, so these journeys are worth booking in advance rather than calling for on the spot — we will nearly always come, but not always immediately.
The two towns sit five hundred feet apart, joined by the cliff railway and a very steep road. That is the detail that matters when you book: tell us whether you want Lynton at the top or Lynmouth down at the harbour, because they are not interchangeable and the walk between them is not one to attempt with luggage.

The A39 over Exmoor
The coast road climbs onto the moor and drops down again through Countisbury, and it is exposed. In winter it is one of the first roads in the area to be affected by snow, ice and fog, and in summer it is slow behind caravans.
We are honest about that when quoting a time. If you are connecting to a train at Barnstaple or a flight from Exeter or Bristol, give us the departure time and we will build the margin in rather than cutting it fine on a road that does not reward optimism.
Lynton, Lynmouth and the cliff railway
The cliff railway links the two towns but does not run late or all year, which is when we get called. A taxi between Lynton and Lynmouth is a short job but a genuinely useful one if you are carrying anything or the weather has turned.
We also run to the Valley of Rocks, Watersmeet and the walking routes around them. Walkers finishing at dusk further along the coast path is a regular call — tell us where you expect to come out and roughly when.
Long-distance and airport work from Lynton
From Lynton, everything is far. Exeter Airport is the best part of two hours and Bristol is longer, which makes an early flight a very early start and makes booking ahead essential rather than advisable.
For these journeys we agree a fixed fare before you travel and track flight numbers on returns. For two or more passengers a direct car is often better value than the alternative, which from this corner of Exmoor usually means a taxi to a station and then several changes.
