Great Torrington sits on a hill above the Torridge, and the climb in and out of the town is the thing that shapes every journey here. Coming up from the river the road is steep and narrow, which is why a mapping app's estimate is often optimistic and why we quote around twenty-five minutes to Barnstaple rather than the twenty the mileage suggests.
We pick up from the town centre and High Street, the estates out towards Calf Street, and the visitor sites people arrive at without a car — RHS Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal and the Torrington 1646 attraction. The Tarka Trail car park at Torrington Station is another regular one, usually with bikes involved.

Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal and days out
RHS Rosemoor is a mile south of the town on the A3124 and has no bus service worth relying on outside the middle of the day, so taxis in and out are common — particularly for garden visitors who have travelled to Barnstaple by train.
We also run to Dartington Crystal and Torrington 1646. If you are making a day of it, book the return when you book the outward leg; these are places where you finish at an unpredictable time and there is nothing waiting outside.
The Tarka Trail and bikes
Torrington Station is one of the main access points to the Tarka Trail, and a good proportion of our work here is cyclists who have ridden one way and do not fancy riding back. We can carry bikes, but not on every vehicle and not without warning — tell us how many when you book so we send something with the space.
The same applies in reverse for walkers finishing a section of the trail in the dark, which happens more often than people plan for in winter.
Getting to Barnstaple and the hospital
Most Torrington journeys into Barnstaple are appointments, shopping or connections at Barnstaple station. North Devon District Hospital runs are steady work, and we book them from the appointment time backwards rather than from a pickup time.
The evening bus service out of Torrington finishes early, which is the practical reason most people call us — getting home after something that runs past eight is otherwise difficult.
