Most of our work never leaves Barnstaple's own postcode. It is the run from Pilton to the hospital, Newport to the station, Forches to Green Lanes, or Landkey home after an evening in town. These are short journeys, and we are glad to do them.
This page covers the neighbourhoods around the town centre (Pilton, Newport, Sticklepath, Roundswell, Whiddon Valley and Forches) and the villages just beyond them: Landkey, Bishop's Tawton, Goodleigh, Tawstock and Swimbridge. Our base is on Station Road in Sticklepath, so none of them is far from a car.
Distance from Barnstaple
About 1 to 5 miles
Typical journey time
Around 5 to 15 minutes
Pilton, Newport and Sticklepath
Pilton sits on the north side of the town centre, on the road out towards the hospital and Braunton, with narrow older streets around Pilton Street and the church. Newport is to the south-east, along the road towards Bishop's Tawton. Sticklepath is across the Long Bridge on the west bank of the Taw, close to the railway station and our own base.
Pickups here are quick, often within minutes of booking. If you live on one of Pilton's tighter lanes, tell us where a car can stop safely, and the driver will meet you there rather than block the road.
Roundswell, Whiddon Valley and Forches
Roundswell, on the south-west edge of town by the link road, is mostly retail and business parks plus newer housing. Whiddon Valley, to the east, combines an industrial estate with residential streets, and Forches is the large estate on the hill above it.
A lot of our travel here is to and from work, including early and late shifts at hours when the buses have stopped. If you work a regular pattern, a standing booking means you arrange it once rather than every week.
Landkey, Bishop's Tawton, Goodleigh, Tawstock and Swimbridge
These villages are only a few miles out, but evening buses are limited or non-existent, and walking back along the A361 or the A377 at night is not an option. Landkey and Swimbridge are east of town off the A361. Bishop's Tawton and Tawstock are south along the Taw valley, and Goodleigh is up the lanes to the north-east.
Farm addresses and cottages on the lanes are not always where a satnav thinks they are. A landmark, a gate name or a what3words reference when you book saves the driver a wrong turn in the dark.
Short journeys are not a nuisance
People sometimes apologise for booking a taxi for a mile and a half. There is no need to. A trip to the doctor's, a weekly shop with heavy bags, or a lift home in the rain is exactly what a local firm is for.
We agree the fare before you travel, so there is no meter running while the car waits at the lights on the Long Bridge or in traffic at Roundswell. If you are going further, such as the station, the hospital or an airport, the same applies.
